TTM Success - Movie Director John Carpenter

John Carpenter is a film director who is best known for directing several iconic horror and science fiction films from the 1970s and 1980s including 'Halloween', 'The Fog', 'Christine', and the martial arts comedy 'Big Trouble in Little China'. He is also known for composing most of the music for his films including the now iconic theme music for the 'Halloween' films.

 He sent me a signed 8x10 photo in my SASE in 40 days.

    Hi Mark, I saw your TTM success of John Carpenter and thought it was really neat! I just wanted to ask a quick question, as I sent a TTM to one of my favorite actresses in April. She hasn't replied back, and so I was wondering whether it was because of the way I sent my mail. I sent an SAE along with my letter request, instead of an SASE, because I couldn't find a way to get the stamp from online, and my post office didn't sell any from the other country. I couldn't use an IRC either, as those weren't sold at my post office either. Would sending an SAE hurt your chances of getting a reply?

      Hi there! Sometimes it does affect your chances, sometimes not. It really depends on the celebrity. Who was it that you sent out for?

    I sent out my letter to actress Felicity Jones, who recently played in the movie Star Wars, Rogue One. It was through this movie that I first heard about her, and I was inspired to write a letter to her to thank her for her role in the movie. I never liked Star Wars at first, so the fact that this movie had a great impact on me is the reason why my letter out to her is important. I've seen previous successes on Fanmail biz for her, but those that did get a reply back all sent SASES. Only in one case did I see a response that didn't consist of a SASE.

    To be honest, I was worried, as it was through this film that made her more well-known, apart from one other movie. (Those that send fanmail... I feel as if with many letters, it's like a "competition" for which piece of mail can catch the actors' eye) I know that actors are busy in general, and I don't know whether she received my letter either... considering it's already July, since April. 3 months.

    I've heard that nowadays, actors are cautious of fan mail too. I had no intention of coming across as a "crazy" fan, as I feel that my letter to her was genuine and honest. I certainly hope that she can see my sincerity and find it worthwhile to reply, though at this point I am not sure whether to keep on holding hope. This is the very first time I sent a letter out to someone famous.

    What are your thoughts on this? When waiting for replies, did you ever think of giving up?

      Well, when it comes to autographs I never really give up hope. I've gotten replies back literally years after I've sent them so its always possible.

      I never thought of that!
      I viewed your blog and saw most of your replies were around 40 days or 2-3 months. It never occurred to me it could take years for a reply. Do you think an actor could really pay for postage though, if your letter was sincere enough? (Despite an SASE being prefered?)

      It really depends on the celebrity. Most of the time for current actors, they aren't the ones actually mailing your item but rather their management is. Sending a SASE is your best bet, but not sending one doesn't automatically equal failure.

      That's really good to hear. Glad to hear that from another perspective. I'm curious, when did you first decide you wanted to send autograph requests to movie stars and other celebrities?

      Another question is, have you always known to send SASES or did you send an SAE once before, and get a reply to that?

      My apologies for asking so many questions. I was excited to hear from you because you're an autograph collector, and really it's the first time I've ever heard of this as a hobby. Really interesting. :)
